This photoshoot was done on WWU’s campus in the digital media center. I worked closely with Avary to communicate her authentic handmade earrings through visuals, in this case, photography. We had several planning sessions, decided on other creatives to join us in the production, contacted potential models, and scheduled the time in the DMC. We chose November 8th for a few reasons. We wanted to make sure it was first of all a day and time that worked for everyone involved, we had to work around work schedules, school schedules, the DMC schedule, etc. We decided to keep it “limited” and do five pairs of earrings on five different models. For me, as a makeup artist, I had to figure out a way to plan and execute five completely different looks on five completely different girls, all within a few hours.
I first rented a study room on the third floor of the library and set it up as a makeup studio. I brought all my brushes and products from home, along with tons of extras I anticipated we might need. Between the time of 12:30 and 3, I was able to do Nour’s entire makeup as well as Sydney’s makeup. Scheduling the models to come in for hair and makeup and then scheduling them a different time to come and actually shoot was a bit difficult. There was a lot of down time for some people, whereas I never stopped moving for the entire six hour stretch.
We didn’t have access to the DMC until 3:00, and at that time the photographer, Lucas, and the stylist, Levi, met up and we started setting up so we could start shooting as soon as possible. Suzanne had class until around 3:30, so Nour and Sydney got started shooting while I moved on to my fourth makeup look of the day. Because we were now confined to the DMC, I had to set up a makeup station around a small table in the corner. At this time, Nour and Sydney were shooting while I was doing makeup, so I ended up having to do Suzanne and Tiani’s makeup in the dark, just with an iPhone flashlight. Tiani had class until 4, so by the time Suzanne’s makeup was done and she started shooting, I had another face in my chair. The fifth makeup look was the most challenging, even though the concept was arguably the most basic.
